Chris Barker acts as our Appointed Quarry Manager for blasting operations at our Exmouth Quarry. Chris has a can do attitude and hands on approach and is always happy to help out in any way, including helping with our mines regulation compliance and squaring away our mines record book.
Chris recently completed a drill and blast campaign which resulted in a reduction in cost and a noticeable improvement in fragmentation. One thing that stood out compared with previous blasting contractors was Chris’ professionalism which included QAQC completed to a much higher standard and required paperwork available before requested.

We contracted Quarry Manager Services to put together and submit our Project Management Plan for approval to the Department of Mines and Petroleum for our Basalt Quarry. This has been successfully completed.
Chris has an excellent understanding of what’s involved with mine approvals and works in with us to achieve approvals that suit our individual business. Chris has structured our environmental approvals in a way that ensures we don’t spent money unnecessarily and his knowledge of mining services available and realistic pricing for these services keeps our costs down.
Chris has also completed our clearing permit and concrete batch plant approval at our Greenbushes industrial premises.

Talison Lithium has engaged Chris Barker from Quarry Manager Services for the last two years at the Greenbushes Open Pit.
Chris has been pivotal in establishing ground support installation equipment and systems from design and fabrication through to implementation and operation in the Greenbushes hard rock open pit using cable bolts, structural mesh installations and recent developments toward fibreglass bolts. This has included setting up grouting equipment and a mobile platform, tensioning equipment, tooling and accessories, procedural review, installation support and QAQC.
The work Chris has done has resulted in significant improvements in the geotechnical management of the open pit, significantly reducing the rock fall risk at the operation. We are grateful to have had Chris’s expertise to support the works. Principally as Chris Barker has a wide range of skills from the practical requirements of the job through to the procedural systems to train and allow new personnel to develop new skills in ground support.
As Quarry Manager at Greenbushes, I have also cited his work in Explosives Management Plans and Safety Management Plans for civil tenders and quarry operations surrounding the Greenbushes mine and Management Plans. His plans are very thorough and cover all requirements to manage the risks without over complicating the plan with unnecessary requirements. Accordingly, we are now engaging Chris to provide expertise in explosives trials and blast optimisations at Greenbushes.

I worked with Chris on the rock anchor installation project at Exmouth, where Chris was responsible for the installation of the rock anchors.
